The Catalina Games Volunteer Program offers college credit to students from the Applied Computer Graphics department at CSU Chico, primarily those associated with Chico State Game Studios. Completion of one semester with Catalina Games will fulfill the industry internship units needed for a Bachelors in Applied Computer Graphics.
The Catalina Games Volunteer Program also offers non-credit industry experience opportunities to students from any major at CSU Chico and Chatham University, as well as independent game developers worldwide.

Please note: Applicants who possess almost all required experience for a position may also be considered.

Creation of digital concept art from asset descriptions and references, as well as graphics for catalinagames.com. This will include ui, environments, characters, props, weapons and vehicles. Thumbnails, sketches, model sheets, and illustrations will be standard. Adaptation to project visual style will be necessary.

The applicant should be independently self-motivated, a team player, with excellent interpersonal ability. The position requires strong communication with team leads to create new concepts and iterative revisions from feedback by the Art Director. Ability to take constructive criticism and maintain a professional attitude is a must.

Required:

  • An online portfolio of original digital art with application. It should demonstrate a strong understanding of ideation, color theory, lighting, mood, costuming, architecture, environmental detail, human, animal and/or creature anatomy, relevant to work presented.
  • Proficiency in Photoshop or other graphics program.
  • All work will be completed remotely and online, therefore frequent, reliable internet access is mandatory.
  • Ability to manage time and multiple deadlines effectively.

Preferred:

  • Traditional art background and storyboarding experience.
  • A good eye for cinematic shot composition, proportion, prospective, and detail.
  • An understanding of how concepts translate to in-game assets within Game Maker Studio.

Creation of 2D or 3D sprite assets from concept art for use in Game Maker Studio, as well as catalinagames.com. Also pixel art from asset descriptions and references as needed. Design and maintain visual and technical aspects of catalinagames.com. Creation of browser and visitor friendly layouts will be standard, including graphic design of user interface features, site animations, and special-effects elements. Emphasis will be given to mobilization to ensure functionality across any device.

The applicant should be independently self-motivated, a team player, with excellent interpersonal ability. The position requires strong communication with team leads to create new web content and iterative revisions from feedback by the Web Administrator. Ability to take constructive criticism and maintain a professional attitude is a must.

Required:

  • An online portfolio of original digital art and site designs with application.
  • Strong understanding of web-based technologies and thorough knowledge of HTML, PhotoShop, Illustrator, and/or other design-related applications.
  • Proficiency with site optimization for mobile and other devices.
  • Experience publishing games exported from Game Maker Studio to HTML5 for online play.
  • All work will be completed remotely and online, therefore frequent, reliable internet access is mandatory.
  • Ability to manage time and multiple deadlines effectively.

Preferred:

  • A strong traditional art background.
  • Experience with developing site features using Java and CSS.

Work closely with art, level design, and animation teams to ensure cohesion of visual assets with programming necessary to produce HTML5 playable exports with Game Maker Studio.

The applicant should be independently self-motivated, a team player, with excellent interpersonal ability. The position requires strong communication with team leads to create efficient, functional titles, as well as iterative revisions from feedback by the Producer. Ability to take constructive criticism and maintain a professional attitude is a must.

Required:

  • An online portfolio displaying functional examples of original programming for games at time of application.
  • Intermediate to strong experience with GMS programming, exporting to HTML5, and the ability to write custom scripts as needed.
  • All work will be completed remotely and online, therefore frequent, reliable internet access is mandatory.
  • Ability to manage time and multiple deadlines effectively.

Preferred:

  • In lieu of functional examples of programming, endorsement of programming knowledge from a reputable source may be considered.
